“Project S.E.E.” (Project – Support, Education, and Empowerment) of Samaritan Ministries is an enrichment program designed to reduce the need for drugs and alcohol among at risk youth who reside in the Cumberland View Housing Development in Nashville, Tennessee. It is a comprehensive community based program and partnership between churches, private corporations and government agencies.
Key program components include:
1. Tutorial Program designed to address academic needs of youth
2. Monitoring to record progress at home and school
3. Mentoring to provide positive cultural enrichment experience
4. Project LEAD - High Expectations designed to help participants understand self, improve self-esteem, recognize and demonstrate appropriate behavior and demonstrate desirable decision making skills.
Prevention strategies for this targeted population address the inter-connectedness of alcohol and other drug use, teen pregnancy, education, and conflicts at home and school. Moreover, program components are constructed around traditional values that are historical within the Black experience.
The Coordinator of Volunteer Services/Field Specialist is key to this prevention demonstration program. A cadre of volunteers is utilized to implement program components. Individuals supported by respective professional fraternal and or social organizations are recruited to work with youth. This strategy works because these organizations have a history and a tradition of positive involvement with youth. Project S.E.E. also networks with every social system in the area to impact the lives of the children in this community.
